Leviathan

Leviathan (from Hebrew liwyatan) is a beast from the Old Testament, associated with Satan, described as a terrible and powerful sea serpent or dragon that terrifies those who navigate its waters.

For this reason, the leviathan has been adopted as a synonym for a sea monster, and has been present in various cultures throughout time. The Moby Dick whale or the Scandinavian Kraken are some examples of it.

The symphonic poem Leviathan is mainly based on the depictions of this creature by Christian culture. The work consists of four sections without break:

I. The Fifth Day

A majestic description of the Fifth Day of Genesis, in which God created “the great sea monsters and all beings that live in the water”, including Leviathan.

II.”…the dragon that lives in the sea”

An artistic depiction of Leviathan. During the golden age of sea voyages, European sailors viewed it as a gigantic whale or sea serpent, devouring entire ships by rapidly swimming around them creating a whirlpool.

III. Snake’s Lair

Cave in which the beast rests, and remains calm but watching the surrounding waters.

IV. Death of Leviathan

Depicts the battle between God and Leviathan, which according to the Bible will take place in the last days of the world.

El Leviathan (del hebreo liwyatan) es una bestia marina del Antiguo Testamento, asociada a Satanás, descrito como una terrible y poderosa serpiente o dragón del mar que aterroriza a quienes navegan en sus aguas.

Por ello, el leviatán se ha adoptado como sinónimo de monstruo marino, y ha estado presente en diversas culturas a lo largo de los tiempos. La ballena Moby Dick o el Kraken escandinavo pueden considerarse ejemplos.

El poema sinfónico Leviathan se basa, principalmente, en las menciones que de esta criatura se dan en la cultura cristiana. La obra consta de cuatro secciones sin pausa:

I. El Día Quinto

Una majestuosa descripción del Día Quinto del Génesis, en el que Dios creó “los grandes monstruos marinos y todos los seres que viven en el agua”, entre ellos, también el Leviathan.

II.”…el dragón que vive en la mar”

Una descripción artística de Leviathan. Durante la edad de oro de los viajes marinos, los marineros europeos lo vieron como una gigantesca ballena o serpiente marina, que devoraba naves enteras al nadar rápidamente alrededor de los cascos creando un torbellino.

III. Guarida de la serpiente

Cueva en la que reposa la bestia, y permanece tranquila pero atenta a las aguas que la rodean.

IV. Muerte de Leviathan

Narra la batalla entre Dios y Leviathan, que según la Biblia, acontecerá en los últimos días del mundo.
